I apply quantum mechanics to simulate the motions of electrons in molecules, using computers. Not that we should be spending as much money trying to pinpoint a correct understanding of quantum mechanics as we do looking for supersymmetry, of course. The purpose of this study is to understand the world fundamentally, but there are also practical challenges to exploit quantum mechanics in a broader context. QM is OK for FAPP, however I am not sure I want to shut up and calculate. These technologies exploit quantum mechanics, the physics that dominates the atomic world, to perform disparate tasks such as nanoscale temperature measurement and processing quantum information with lasers. But as Avi Wigderson pointed out to me, the idea that quantum mechanics is about information rather than waves or particles is still extremely non-standard, and would have been considered insane fifteen years ago. The second part of this course describes selected practical applications of quantum mechanics. I saw him speak about nanotechnology As a very practical scientist, he can fly into a hurricane to eyeball it, and gather just as much information as a supercomputer simulation. Their quantum superfluid is simply set up by shining laser beams on the device, it can lead to practical ultrasensitive detectors. The appropriate tools are very different. Finally, in Chapters 10 and 11, we shall examine spin angular momentum, and the addition of orbital and spin angular momentum, respectively. This new variational principle may have broad applicability in a wide range of practical and theoretical problems across multiple disciplines." -- Chad Galley (Read his article: "Losing Energy with Hamilton's Principle of Least The terms in the inequality are the correlations of measurement results. Bell's inequality is satisfied by the predictions of any local realistic theory, whereas quantum mechanics predicts measurement outcomes that can violate it. I'm doing this calculation for the mundane and practical purpose of helping to identify an unknown compound in a pharmaceutical dosage form. We won't know whether supersymmetry is real .. Accurate simulations of this type provide in Horst Störmer of Columbia University, and formerly Bell Labs, who discovered the fractional quantum Hall effect.
